How to play Monster Maker
Monster Maker is a collaborative drawing game for two or three people on iPhone and iPad. Each monster has three parts. The fun comes from drawing your part without seeing the complete creature until the end.
Get ready for your first monster
For a game in the same room, you need one iPhone or iPad with the app installed. Choose two or three players and enter your names. You can draw with your finger; an Apple Pencil is optional on a compatible iPad.
Decide whether to invent any creature you like or agree on a loose theme, such as sea monsters. Keep your actual drawing secret so the final reveal still surprises everyone.
Draw the head, body and legs
Every game follows the same three-part shape:
- Draw the head. Give it eyes, a mouth, horns or whatever belongs on your creature. Finish your turn so your part folds away.
- Pass to the next player, who draws the body without seeing the whole head. A round belly, robot shell or furry middle can all work.
- Draw the legs in the final turn. Feet, tentacles or wheels give your monster a way to move.
- Reveal the complete creature together. The finished monster goes into your gallery, where you can name it and share it.
Playing with two or three people
With three players, each person draws one part. With two players, one person takes two of the three turns. You still make a complete head, body and legs; you do not need a third person to finish a monster.
For another round, change who starts so you each get to try a different part. Simple drawings work just as well as careful ones: the unexpected combination is what gives the creature its character.
Use the drawing tools
Try ink, pencil or crayon, use the eraser, and undo when you want to change something. You do not need to plan a perfect character before you start. Draw a clear shape, add one strange detail, then let the next person surprise you.
On one device, the game works offline. To play from different places, use online play and send your friends an invitation link or game code. Online turns can happen at different times.
Questions about the game
Do all three parts have to match?
No. An unlikely head, body and set of legs are part of the fun. Agreeing on a theme is optional.
Can we keep the finished drawings?
Yes. Completed monsters go into your gallery. You can name and share them, and find them on your other devices through iCloud syncing.
